Cartilage function and joint problems

What is cartilage:

Articular cartilage is a connective tissue found in our bodies, covering the joints and allowing them to move properly. It is white in color and is composed of cells, chondrocytes, water, collagen fibers, glycolic acid and proteins.

It is formed by a fluid component that has the function of absorbing trauma, and a solid part that increases the resistance. It is not irrigated by blood vessels and that is why it does not regenerate easily.

There are circumstances that lead to joint injuries, among them, the most common are:

Intense sports activities, such as running, tennis, basketball that bring an overload to the joints that can wear out over time.

Post-traumatic type injuries, due to heavy impacts. These often result in microfractures of the trabeculae of the bone.

Degenerative injuries caused by the physiological deterioration of articular cartilage, which are often accelerated by misalignment of the lower limbs or ligament injuries.

Which ones are most prone to wear and tear:

The most affected joints are those of the knee, tibio tarsica and hip, which are the most burdened by the load and throughout the day allow us to perform normal activities.

The thinning of the articular cartilage leads to different types of pain that is acute in the case of trauma, but progressive in the case of degenerative processes.

In some cases the pain is accompanied by intra-articular effusion and difficulty in movements.

What to do to try to protect our joints?

First of all we have to avoid an excessive load due to overweight, especially when the muscle mass is low. It is not enough to be thin, to defend our cartilage we must maintain adequate muscle tone.

Practicing some sports, such as swimming, free body exercises or cycling that do not cause harmful consequences for the joints, but are essential for muscle strengthening.

In order to promote the conservative processes of articular cartilage, it is possible to take supplements based on collagen, hyaluronic acid, glycosaminoglycans, turmeric in the form of sachets or capsules.

Turmeric is an excellent natural antioxidant with recognized properties, which helps to relieve the feeling of soreness and improve the mobility of the osteoarticular system. Often in turmeric-based supplements is associated with Glucosamine of plant origin, an ingredient necessary for the production of glycosaminoglycans (GAG), essential for cartilage.  This type of integration (association turmeric and glucosamine) is useful in providing some of the elements that make up joints and cartilage, in order to facilitate the body in its maintenance work and help the preservation of a state of general osteoarticular well-being.

Only in the case of serious cartilage lesions, hyaluronic acid infiltrations can be made, under specialist advice, intra-articularly. These replace the synovial fluid, suitable for the restoration of the physiological properties of the compromised joints and allow the coverage of the regions that have suffered the damage by improving their function.
